National Child's Day

On Monday November 23, 2009  the Senate of Canada opened its doors to over 250 children and youth in honour of National Child's Day. This 20th Anniversary celebration was hosted by the Senate of Canada in cooperation with CAYFO. The two hour program showcased the incredible acheivements of children and youth.

This year's theme was "Child Day: Coming of Age".

Exceptional youth performances by the Ottawa Catholic School Board Children's Choir, the inspiring Propeller Dancers, the HB Breakers, a classical youth quartet, and the Baobab Tree Drummers entertained hundreds of local school children and senators alike. CanAssist recipients showcased the amazing technology that is being developed in Canada for those living with disabilities. 

CAYFO Spirit of the Capital Youth Award nominee, Allie MacIsaac, was presented with the 2009 Awesome Kid Award in recognition of her incredible optimism and determined attitude despite her physical challenges living with Cystic Fibrosis and Type 1 Diabetes. Allie is an accomplished public speaker and spokesperson for CF as well as a competitive cross-country runner.

National Child Day commemorates the adoption of the Convention on the Rights of the Child by the United Nations General Assembly on November 20, 1989. Canada ratified the convention in December 1991.
